Maria C. Piscopo, age 69, who lived in Brewster, and her late husband, Joseph, took over Johnny's Pizzeria in Mount Vernon from Joseph's father who started the business 76 years ago.

The three-vehicle crash occurred around 1 a.m. July 21.

An initial investigation suggests that Joseph Piscopo Jr., 47, who was driving a 2001 GMC Denali, with Maria Piscopo in the passenger seat, was traveling northbound when he rear-ended a 2001 Dodge Dakota in North Castle, state police said.

While attempting to pull off onto the shoulder of the highway, Piscopo’s Denali was then rear-ended by a 2012 Izuzu box truck operated by Saed K. Alkasaji, 43, of Danbury, according to police.

Maria Piscopo was born on March 4, 1949 in Italy to Americo and Clementina Colabella.

Maria married Joseph Piscopo on May 9, 1970 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Joseph died in 2016.

She was the mother of Joseph, Ricky, Concetta, and Tina (Michael); grandmother of Brianna Marie, Joey, Christian, and Ava Marie.

She is also survived by two sisters and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family will honor Maria’s life on Thursday, July 26, and Friday, July 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Yannantuono Burr Davis Sharpe Funeral Home.

The funeral mass 10:15 am Saturday, July 28 at Sts. Peter & Paul-St Ursula’s Church in Mount Vernon.

Entombment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
